Heat Therapy for RA
Electrotherapy can be a useful adjunctive treatment for managing symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), primarily aiming to reduce pain and improve function.
Use of electrical modalities helps in reduction of swelling, muscle spasm and elasticity of periarticular structures obtained. TENS uses sticky electrode patches attached to a small, battery-operated device. It sends an electric current to your nerves to override pain signals. TENS relieves pain is by triggering the release of natural painkillers in the brain.
1. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) Purpose: TENS is often used to help manage pain. Procedure: Electrodes are placed on the skin near the area of pain. Low-voltage electrical impulses are delivered through these electrodes. The sensation from TENS can vary from a mild tingling to a stronger stimulation. Benefits: Can reduce pain perception and may also help in increasing endorphin levels, which can help with pain relief.
2. Electrical Stimulation Therapy (EST) Purpose: EST can help in muscle re-education, reducing pain, and improving joint function. Procedure: Similar to TENS, but the focus can also be on stimulating specific muscles or nerves to improve strength and coordination. Benefits: Can help with muscle strengthening and improving mobility around the affected joints.
3. Interferential Current Therapy (IFC) Purpose: IFC is used to reduce pain and inflammation. Procedure: Two medium-frequency currents are passed through the affected area. The interference between these currents creates a low-frequency stimulation effect. Benefits: Can penetrate deeper tissues compared to TENS and is often used to alleviate pain and inflammation.
4. Ultrasound Therapy Purpose: Primarily used for deep tissue heating and reducing inflammation. Procedure: A device emits high-frequency sound waves that penetrate the skin and create a deep heating effect in the tissues. Benefits: Can increase blood flow, promote tissue healing, and reduce pain and stiffness.
5. Microcurrent Therapy Purpose: Used to promote tissue repair and reduce pain. Procedure: Extremely low-level electrical currents are applied to the skin, which can stimulate cellular repair processes. Benefits: May help in reducing pain and promoting healing of tissues.
The first session of the package will be a consultation by our therapist who will choose appropriate electrotherapy procedure for your specific condition.
Electrotherapy is often used in conjunction with other treatment modalities, such as physical therapy and medication, for a comprehensive management plan.
