About this therapy

Prishta Basti, a specialized Ayurvedic treatment, is used for conditions affecting the lower back and pelvic area. It is particularly effective for issues such as lower back pain, sciatica, and related musculoskeletal problems. Here’s a closer look at when and why Prishta Basti might be administered:

The pesky cervical pains and agonizing back aches would be a tale of the past with this powerful Ayurvedic therapy. This home therapy helps in releasing muscle tightness in the spinal region and if done regularly can prove very efficacious in conditions like chronic backache, cervical and lumbar spondylosis.

Lower Back Pain (Lumbago): Prishta Basti is often used to alleviate chronic or acute lower back pain by addressing the underlying dosha imbalances that contribute to discomfort and stiffness.

Sciatica: If someone is experiencing sciatic nerve pain, which radiates from the lower back down the leg, Prishta Basti can help by reducing inflammation and promoting healing in the affected area.

Spinal Issues: Conditions like herniated discs or degenerative disc disease may benefit from this treatment, as it targets the lower back and the areas surrounding the spine.

Pelvic Disorders: It can also be useful for addressing issues related to the pelvic region, such as pelvic inflammatory disease or discomfort associated with menstruation.

Musculoskeletal Imbalances: Prishta Basti helps in balancing the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) specifically in the lower back region, which can contribute to overall better musculoskeletal health.

How is it done?

Our Panchakarma Therapist would make a compartment with ground urad dal on the Prishtha (area from the cervical to the lumbar spinal region)

Lukewarm medicinal oil would be poured into the compartment and retained for a specific period of time

The treatment involves administering medicated oils or decoctions through the rectum, which helps in directly targeting the lower back and pelvis area. The choice of the specific formulation depends on the individual's dosha imbalance and the nature of their condition.

Benefits
  1. Pain Relief: Prishta Basti can effectively relieve lower back pain, including chronic pain and acute discomfort. The medicated oils or decoctions used help soothe the nerves and reduce inflammation.
  2. Eliminates paraspinal muscle tightness and spasms
  3. Reduced Inflammation: The medicated substances used in Prishta Basti have anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce swelling and irritation in the lower back, pelvic area and the whole spine.
  4. Improved Mobility: By addressing stiffness and inflammation in the lower back, this treatment removes numbness and enhances flexibility and range of motion, making it easier to move and perform daily activities.
  5. Nourishes and strengthens the bones, connective tissues, ligaments and nerves
  6. Enhanced Blood Circulation: The treatment promotes better blood flow to the lower back region, which aids in the healing process and can improve overall tissue health.
  7. Balancing Doshas: In Ayurveda, Prishta Basti helps balance the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) that may be causing or contributing to musculoskeletal issues in the lower back. This balance supports overall health and prevents recurrence of symptoms.
  8. Support for Pelvic Health: It can be beneficial for pelvic disorders, including those affecting reproductive health or menstrual discomfort, by improving circulation and reducing inflammation in the pelvic region.
  9. Nerve Health: The treatment helps soothe the nerves in the lower back, which can be particularly beneficial for conditions like sciatica, where nerve irritation is a key issue.
